If you’re a Taylor Swift fan, you know her career is filled with distinct eras—each one a reflection of her growth, creativity, and impact on the world. This year at UMCG we’re diving into the greatest “era” of all time: Jesus’ life. Each sermon series in 2025 serves as a new chapter, a unique era in Jesus’ journey, inviting us to see how His life and teachings continue to inspire and transform.
Our year with Jesus began in December with our Advent series, where we stepped into Jesus’ story with “The Light of Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy: Preparing Our Hearts for Jesus.” Think of this as Jesus’ “debut era”—His genealogy, birth, and the anticipation of the light He brings to the world. We’ll reflect on hope through His lineage, peace in John the Baptist’s call, and love through Mary’s song. It’s an invitation to prepare our hearts for the transformative light that’s about to dawn.
From there, we transition to “A Year with Jesus: The Early Years,” exploring His childhood and formative moments. This era takes us from the manger to the temple, where young Jesus amazes the elders with His wisdom. It’s a glimpse into His foundation, offering insight into the One who would change the course of history.
Next, we dive into “Defining Moments,” a series that captures the pivotal events of Jesus’ ministry. Think of this as His “1989 era”—bold, revolutionary, and filled with clarity. From His baptism and temptation in the wilderness to His first miracle at Cana and His fearless confrontation with religious leaders, these moments reveal the heart of who Jesus is and what He came to do.
As we approach Lent, “Playing Chess” unfolds, taking us through the carefully orchestrated final moves of Jesus’ earthly ministry. This era mirrors the strategic brilliance of an artist at their peak, showing us how every step—each teaching, betrayal, and sacrifice—was part of God’s grand design for redemption. It culminates with “Checkmate,” a victorious celebration of the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
But the story doesn’t stop there. The Easter season launches us into “Resurrection Road,” a series that echoes the transformative power of Jesus’ victory over death. This era is all about new beginnings—His appearances to the disciples, the doubts of Thomas, and the commissioning of His followers to carry the Good News to the ends of the earth. It’s a celebration of hope reborn and purpose renewed.
The second half of the year turns the spotlight on how Jesus’ teachings shape our lives today. In “Blueprint for Abundant Life,” we uncover the wisdom Jesus offers for living with intention, generosity, and faith. This series feels like the “Speak Now era,” filled with guidance and truths we can carry into every area of our lives.
Then comes “Kingdom Reset: Jesus’ Call to a New Perspective,” challenging us to let go of old ways of thinking and embrace the radical love and inclusivity of God’s kingdom. It’s a call to see the world through fresh eyes, much like Jesus taught in His parables and actions.
Finally, we close the year with “Accessible Grace: The Kingdom in Our Midst,” a reminder that Jesus’ message isn’t reserved for the elite or the perfect—it’s for all of us. This era emphasizes the inclusivity and transformative power of grace, drawing us closer to God and to one another.
Each of these eras invites us to walk alongside Jesus, experiencing his story as our own. Whether you’re a longtime follower of Christ or someone curious about what His life means for you today, this journey has something for everyone. Just as Taylor Swift fans know that every era tells a new part of her story, our year with Jesus reveals the depth and beauty of the greatest story ever told.
So, are you ready for it? Join us as we spend 2025 walking through the life and teachings of Jesus, allowing His story to shape our own. Whether you’re drawn to the hope of Advent, the bold moves of his ministry, or the grace that defines his kingdom, there’s a place for you in this journey. Let’s discover together how Jesus continues to inspire, challenge, and transform.
Happy New Year,
