Stewarding Our Resources: The 40-Year Asset Management Plan

At UMCG, we believe in planning for the future while honoring the past. The Trustees, led by our chair, Ron Donovan, have developed a 40-year asset management plan to ensure the long-term health and vitality of our church. This proactive approach helps us move away from a “fix it when it breaks” mentality and embrace a thoughtful, forward-looking strategy.

What Is an Asset Management Plan?

An asset management plan is like a roadmap for caring for our facilities and properties. It helps us:

  • Track assets: Every part of our church property—stained glass windows, HVAC systems, even parsonage floors—is cataloged in a comprehensive list.
  • Schedule replacements and repairs: Each item is assessed for when it will need attention, avoiding unexpected breakdowns.
  • Estimate costs: The plan calculates costs for repairs or replacements, helping us plan our budget.
  • Align with goals: It ensures that repairs and updates reflect our values, such as sustainability and accessibility.

The annual version of this plan, which Ron calls the “Book of Work,” provides a clear and easy-to-use system for managing projects year by year.

Why This Matters

The 40-year plan is essential for the long-term sustainability of UMCG. By investing $1.5 million now, we can leverage the time value of money to cover the plan’s total projected cost of $8 million. This upfront investment helps future generations by:

  • Avoiding crisis repairs: Proactively addressing issues saves time and money.
  • Pursuing environmentally friendly solutions: For example, planning for solar panels alongside roof replacements.
  • Supporting our mission: Ensuring our downtown church stays a vibrant part of the Geneva community without burdening those who come after us.

Highlights from 2025-2027

The early years of the plan are especially critical as we tackle work on our historic 1870s building. Projects include:

  • Restoring stained glass windows and doors.
  • Replacing roofs and windows.
  • Upgrading lighting and accessibility.

The estimated costs for these years are higher due to these significant projects, but they are crucial investments in our shared ministry.

Funding Our Future

We have a strong start with investments in the UMG Fund, but added funding strategies will be needed. Possibilities include:

  • Grants and rebates: Exploring opportunities like solar energy credits.
  • Capital campaigns: Inviting our congregation to invest in this long-term vision.
  • Generosity and creativity: Trusting in God’s provision as we steward resources faithfully.

We’ll be discussing this plan at the upcoming Church Conference. This is an exciting moment to come together, share ideas, and begin strategizing for the future.

A Legacy of Faithfulness

This 40-year plan is about more than maintaining buildings—it’s about ensuring UMCG continues to illuminate our communities with God’s grace for generations to come. Thank you, Ron Donovan and the Trustees, for your dedication to this vital work. Let’s pray and work together to leave a legacy of faithful stewardship, honoring our past while building a future full of hope.
