Could We Be Entertaining Angels?

In Hebrews 13:2, we are reminded to “not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.” This powerful verse captures the essence of what it means to extend grace through hospitality, a theme that resonates deeply with our recent experiences at UMCG. As we reflect on these moments, we celebrate the ways in which our congregation has embodied this call to welcome and care for others, truly entertaining angels in our midst.

One of the most poignant demonstrations of hospitality occurred last week during the memorial service for John Fasbender. This event was a profound testament to our community’s capacity for grace and care. Hosting such a significant gathering required the collective effort of many hands and hearts. We came together to greet and welcome visitors, bake goods, prepare food, set up spaces, and clean up afterward. Each task, whether visible or behind the scenes, contributed to creating an environment where John’s family and friends, as well as all of us, could feel enveloped in God’s love and grace. It was a beautiful illustration of our community’s commitment to supporting one another in times of sorrow and remembrance.

On the same day, another act of hospitality unfolded in a different but equally impactful way. Two of our teens took the initiative to transform a neglected part of our church into a welcoming space for our youngest ones. What was once a dingy back stairwell, whose faded rainbow steps had become a source of fear for our four-year-olds, was reborn through the efforts of these young women. Using their own money and dedicating several days to the project, they repainted the stairs and adorned the walls with prayers and Scripture. Their work has turned a once daunting passage into a bright, inviting staircase that radiates warmth and welcome for our Sunday School children. This act of love and creativity from our teens not only beautifies our church but also exemplifies the spirit of hospitality that we strive to foster at UMCG.

These stories of hospitality are not just about grand gestures but also about the everyday actions that create a welcoming atmosphere. As members of UMCG, each of us has the opportunity to contribute to this environment in meaningful ways. Here are a few simple yet powerful ways you can help us continue to entertain angels:

1. Greet New Faces: When you see someone you don’t recognize, take a moment to introduce yourself and welcome them. A friendly smile and a warm greeting can make a significant difference in how someone feels.

2. Share your Seat:  Whether it’s during service or at coffee hour, extending an invitation to sit next to you can help newcomers feel included and valued.

3. Wear Your Name Tag: Wearing a name tag helps new members and visitors feel more comfortable approaching you and starting a conversation.

4. Volunteer: There are many opportunities to serve, whether it’s in the nursery, on our AV team, as a greeter, welcome host, or at the Greet the Pastor table, your involvement helps ensure that everyone feels welcome and cared for.

By engaging in these acts of hospitality, we collectively create a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. Each small gesture contributes to the larger tapestry of grace and care that defines our church community. Together, we embody the call to entertain angels, extending God’s love and grace to all who walk through our doors.

In celebrating these moments of hospitality, we recognize the power of our collective efforts and the profound impact they have on our church family and beyond. Let us continue to embrace and extend hospitality as a means of grace, knowing that through these actions, we are not only serving others but also welcoming God’s presence among us – who knows, maybe we’ll be found to have entertained angels?!
